I purchased this thinking I finally found a way to connect my iPod up to my Sony CDX-M650, which is fairly dated by today's standards. The package contains a dongle, which plugs into your Unilink connector and fools it into thinking you have a changer attached so you can actually use the inputs for the changer as an Aux input. Why Sony didn't enable this from the beginning is beyond me, but pretty typical of Sony. The rest is an iPod dock connector at one end, with a pair of RCA's, a fused power lead and a ground connection on the other. I screwed the ground into the same location as my receivers ground connection, then wired the positive lead into the Accessory circuit.
At first, it didn't work at all, just plain wasn't there as far as the receiver wasn't concerned. So, I reseated the Unilink dongle and tried again. This time, the input appeared as CD2 and could be selected with the Source button. Also, the iPod lit up and started charging (1st gen Nano). It worked, but you had to push up on the iPod end of the connection to get the right channel to work. At first, it displayed the track as 01 with a bogus time counter. This seemed to be the only selectable display. At this point, I put the dash back together and tested again. Again, it worked, but the display had changed to just displaying CD2 in large letters. Still couldn't change it using the units 'Disp' button. Which was no big deal, I didn't really care about the display, I just wanted to hear some music coming out of my iPod. Which it did, still with the aforementioned connector problem.
The next morning, I get in the car to go to work, turn the key on and the receiver powers up as usual, but neither of the displays would work and none of the lighting came on. This was weird, so I pushed the source button and the radio came on. I mean just the sound of the radio, there was still no display. And no CD player, not even with a CD in it. Couldn't get the disc back out, either. Some of the controls worked, I could change volume and the radio station (even though I still couldn't see it). I thought my receiver was toast at that point. When I finally took the dash apart again and pulled the dongle off, the receiver was fine. So I uninstalled it and packed it back up to return to Amazon. I won't be ordering a replacement. Perhaps it just doesn't work with receivers of this vintage (circa 2000, when iPods didn't exist and MP3s weren't yet popular), but it was impossible to tell prior to purchase because there are no instructions, nor does METRA have any information about the product on their website. YMMV
I finally threw in the towel and decided to buy a new receiver with iPod control. I found a great price for one on Amazon, it'll be here tomorrow. I'll keep the Sony around to put back in the car when I sell it or trade it in. Or give it to one of my friends that doesn't care about iPods.
