I purchased a portable XM satellite radio receiver, and I was planning on using the FM radio feature to listen to it. Unfortunately, the sound quality was always terrible. Since I didn't want to give up on satellite radio, I had to find a more direct method of transmitting the sound to the car stereo of my Mazda 5.
Mazda sells an audio adapter kit, and I'm sure it's really nice, but it was way too expensive for me. The GROM adapter is about half the cost and got good reviews elsewhere, so I gave it a shot. I'm glad I did.
For starters, the sound from my XM radio is now awesome. Crystal clear and no problems whatsoever.
The reason why I gave this only four stars is because it because it's clunky. Removing the radio to install the adapter was a real pain, but I can't fault the adapter for it. However, the "box" of the adapter sits unsecured inside my dashboard, because there's no mounting bracket. In addition, the audio cable just sticks out of my dashboard. So I would have preferred something that fit my particular Mazda vehicle better. For instance, maybe I could drill a hole in the dashboard and fit a 1/8" jack, so it would have been nice for the adapter to come with hardware that let me do that. In other words, the adapter should have included some way to avoid having a cable dangling from the dashboard.
Regardless, if you have a compatible Mazda vehicle and you want to listen to MP3s or satellite radio, then I strongly recommend this product.
