(More customer reviews)I bought a 2005 Prius earlier this year, and needed a way to connect my iPod touch to the car stereo. After reading a number of reviews on PriusChat.com and other websites, I decided to get the GROM unit. I studied installation instructions carefully before doing it, and it was tricky. I had to remove the glove compartments, then the cover for the vents next to the glove compartments. After that I had to unscrew the big wire harness and move it aside. This is kind of scary for someone who's never worked with car electrical components before. Then I had to plug in the GROM wire to the CD Changer of the stereo. That was by far the hardest thing to do... it took me a good 30 minutes to maneuver my hand and the plug behind the stereo to plug it in. Eventually, though, it snapped into place. Then I tested the unit and it worked great. Drilled a hole in the box under the CD player for the wire and put everything back together and I was good to go.
The unit was not without it's hiccups, though. Sometimes the car stereo wouldn't recognize it and it wouldn't work. Powering off the car and then powering it back on again seems to fix this glitch. Also, sometimes it doesn't play the right playlist, but it's not a major problem. I discovered that the iPod needs to be in "iPod mode" and not running an app for it to work properly. Also, I turn the car stereo off when I turn the car off, because if I leave my iPod in the car for a few minutes while I'm in a store, sometimes I'll come out to find that the iPod has kept playing while the car was off. When my iPod was upgraded to iOS4, the "playlist" feature stopped working and the iPod kept claiming it wouldn't work with the GROM unit by saying "This Accessory is Not Supported by iPod". It would still play and charge the iPod, but selecting the CD changer buttons on the car stereo would cause the unit to hang. When iOS 4.1 came out, this problem was fortunately fixed.
One thing I do have to say is that GROM's tech support is great. They respond to questions quickly, and didn't hesitate to send me a new unit when mine wasn't working correctly, and a new wire when the iPod dock connector was acting flaky. Overall I'm happy with the unit, and it makes my iPod sound great.
