Altec Lansing iMT810 Digital Boombox Review

Altec Lansing iMT810 Digital Boombox

First of all I would like to say I was set on buying the beats by dre. Beatbox. Fortunately I didn't because I've found that the Altec Lansing iMT810 to be a far better purchase. I'm not saying the Beatbox is bad, it's just that the Altec Lansing speaker offers so much more. The sound is absolutely amazing. Bass is exactly how it should be, booming but not overpowering. The highs are very crisp and mids are very defined. If any aspect of the sound doesn't seem to please, there are EQ settings with these speakers, allowing you to set a perfect preset for your music. So all in all, sound is not an issue at all. It is quite phenomenal. The included display is also very useful, allowing you to see what is playing. The volume on these speakers can be set pretty high. It is rather ear shattering at max, but I'm one of those paranoid users who think it might blow the speakers. There are also buttons on the speakers themselves that will come in handy including source, EQ, and forward, and repeat. The altec lansing's source buttons allow multiple mp3 or any music device to be connected to it allowing multiple devices to played instead of having to swap devices. Finally, the Altec Lansing offers the option of running off an AC adapter or batteries which is all the options you need. Take it on the go with batteries or have it stationary. So far compared to the Beatbox, the Altec Lansing offer so much more including the display, multiple source options, buttons on the speakers, and options to run off batteries. Also! the Altec Lansing is priced lower than the Beatbox so I wouldn't see much of a reason to go with the Beatbox. Overall, the Altec Lansing is very pleasing. The quality of the speaker is amazing including the remote that it comes with which is made of a very high quality plastic material. I can't explain it but it feels great and seems like it will last forever. I love this speaker, it does everything that I want in a speaker. Oh yeah it also has a great FM radio. Really great quality seriously and its another thing the Beatbox doesn't have. I would highly recommend this speaker to anyone for it is probably the best one out there considering its lower pricing compared to other popular ipod docks.

Logitech Pure-Fi Anywhere 2 Compact Docking Speakers for iPod and iPhone (White) Review

Logitech Pure-Fi Anywhere 2 Compact Docking Speakers for iPod and iPhone (White)

I just picked these speakers up for my iphone 3G and they work great. The sound is very clear and plenty loud! I listened to them next to the Altec Lansing T612 and the BOSE SDII; these held their own. You will not get the amount of base that the larger units put out but the vocal quality is very good. I needed something that i could listen to music in my bedroom when i fall asleep and this does the trick. I find myself taking them everywhere, the office, outside to wash the cars, and the porch when we grille out. Great sound, good price, and super portable. If you are debating buying these for the others I mentioned, this is a safe bet and will do just fine for most people. I have a complete home stereo system downstairs that contains nothing but highend speakers and I still like to listen to the logitech unit

Logitech Pure-Fi Elite High-Performance Stereo System for iPod (Black) Review

Logitech Pure-Fi Elite High-Performance Stereo System for iPod (Black)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The Pure Fi Elite is the Audiostation from last year with a few minor tweaks and a major quality control issue addressed, mainly the horrible button controls from the Audiostation that didn't work in the first few batches of that earlier product. The Audiostation units got a terrible rep (especially at Best Buy) and many retailers stopped carrying the product and / or steeply discounted it. The revised Elite is therefore hardly a great surprise, but be reassured that the button issue is now fixed.
The Elite's main strength is as an Ipod dock system, and it does a credible job here. The twin 4" woofers and 1" tweeters do a nice job of producing clear and well-differentiated sound, and the 80 watt power of the system means it will be able to get loud enough for most users. There is no distortion even at high volumes, but there is also virtually no stereo separation. The stereo expander DSP does very little, but doesn't hurt anything either. The stereo expander in Altec's IM600 is a lot more effective at increasing the soundfield.
Speaking of comparisons, the $130 Elite sounds roughly similar to the Griffin Amplifi ($100). The Griffin has better bass, while the Elite offers better treble detail. These tendencies are directly related to driver design, with the Amplifi's 2.75" drivers muddying treble a bit but with it's 5" woofer giving better bass extension that the Elite's 4 inch drivers. The Elite has a lot of extra features though and can get a bit louder. It also charges your Ipod even when turned off, a feature which the Griffin lacks. Both units have minimal stereo separation effect, and the Amplifi has no stereo DSP, while the Elite has one that barely works at all.
The Bose Sound Dock ($300 list) generally sounds a bit louder and stronger in mid-tones than the Elite. The bass sounds roughly comparable, and the Elite gets the edge in treble. The SoundDock has much better perceptible stereo separation and the remote also works more reliably and at longer distances, though the Elite has many more feature. The Elite also has a huge price difference, at least in "real world" prices.
The Elite has many unique features. The remote has access to both shuffle mode and up to 6 playlists. It does not offer full Ipod menu control, but unless you have the eyes of an eagle, you probably can't see the Ipod screen details from more than six feet away anyway. The Elite has a sleep timer, a video pass through for most Ipods, an auxiliary input jack, and adjustable bass and treble level. The remote is adequate with access to most features, and a pretty good range, though it needs to be aimed precisely.
What does the Elite lack? The radio sadly is a miserable effort, really an afterthought. The tuner is grade D quality and can barely tune in even strong FM stations and I could not get any AM at all. (This in NYC, admittedly a tough interference environment, but this hardly explains the incredibly bad tuning performance.) Even when you can tune in a station, the reception is usually not clear with annoying hiss and static bursts. A $20 clock radio can tune in more stations. My own Panasonic clock radio can indeed tune in far more stations more clearly, as can my stereo receiver, my Tivoli PAL, and my Sangean table radio. The Elite's tuner is truly incompetent in comparison. As far as dock radio combos, the Altec IM600s tuner is far far better, and the two units go for roughly the same price.
Because of the lame tuning capability, the RDS feature is rendered useless. To get RDS info, you need to have a strong clear FM signal, and the choppy tuning of the FM tuner on the Elite meant that I could get no RDS info at all from the stations in the area that broadcast that program info. Scratch one special feature!
Finally, the presence of a clock and the absence of an alarm indicates feature stripping by Logitech to make sure that you need to spend extra money to get their separate overpriced Ipod clock radio. Not sticking a basic alarm function in a >$100 system which already has a clock is just pure cynical "product differentiation" of the most annoying sort.
Anyway, if you want a decent performance Ipod dock, the good detailed and amply loud sound of the Elite recommends it. The terrible radio tuner will frustrate and disappoint those who want a multi-function unit, and the lack of stereo separation in the sound is an expected though unfortunate deficit. This is definitely a better bargain than the Bose SoundDock, but the Amplifi is a tough competitor, especially since the radio function on the Elite is so poorly implemented. The Griffin has a somewhat less loud sound though richer bass, and is also about 20% cheaper. The Amplifi sounds better with rock and electronic music. The Elite is more stylish and has a few more useful features on the remote like Shuffle and Playlist and also sounds better with classical and acoustic music.
One caution though: the list for the Elite is in theory $300, and paying anywhere near that level would quickly evaporate any of the Elite's advantages. Get the Elite for $150 and you'll be happy, but pay $200 or more and you will probably be paying more than the system is worth, especially with the Griffin consistently selling at or near the $120 price point.

JBL On Stage Micro Portable iPod Speaker and Docking Station (Red) Review

JBL On Stage Micro Portable iPod Speaker and Docking Station (Red)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought the JBL ON Stage Micro in red for my office. It has AMAZING sound for such a tiny unit! I have the Bose Sounddock for my iPod at home and I gotta say...this little speaker sounds like Bose's little sister! I got it on sale at my local Best Buy for $59 because, I guess, they were closing out the red one....the other colors were on sale too, but the red was the cheapest and I liked it best anyway. You will NOT be disappointed in this speaker. It comes w/ an adaptor for every iPod imaginable. I have a 30 G video and it fits nice and snug in the adapter when it is docked in the On Stage Micro. The sound is rich, clear and deep. It takes up very little space, as it's footprint is about the size of a small teacup saucer. Bonus: besides all the adapter inserts, this unit also has a cloth zippered carrying pouch that holds the speaker, cord, remote....w/ enough room for your iPod too! Oh, and the remote is great....finally, one I can control the iPod's menu with! Can scroll thru songs and everything.

Logitech S715i Rechargeable Speaker for iPod and iPhone Review

Logitech S715i Rechargeable Speaker for iPod and iPhone
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this docking station for use while deployed to Iraq and I hijacked my wife's Amazon account to do it (smart, right?). It is surprisingly light and slim, especially considering the fullness, crispness, and volume of the sound that it produces. I have not been disappointed, particularly at this price point.
Features that I really like:
1. Dual voltage, which is great for overseas travel.
2. Comes with power adapter.
3. AUX-IN capability has been very useful for plugging in to my laptop for movies.
4. They did away with the iPod inserts, and the design ingeniously allows whatever iPod you insert to rest against a back stop, so that you aren't stressing the connector when you push on the iPod to control it.
5. Remote is simple on features but works very well even when not pointed directly at the unit.
Features that could still be improved:
1. The carry case is more like a dust cover. It is made from the same material those re-usable grocery bags are made from. I am not complaining that it doesn't come with something more substantial at this price, but I do hope that Logitech or some other manufacturer makes something with padding for those of us who travel a lot. I'd be happy to purchase it as an accessory.
2. The AC adapter would be even better if the prongs folded in, as many travel adapters do.
3. You can't use an iPod touch that has a case on it. The docking area narrows toward the bottom making the width a problem--even with slim fitting cases. This just means you have to have a case that comes off easily or one that has a detachable bottom.
Overall I give this a 5 star rating. I waited about a month and a half for this to be released based on initial industry industry reviews (CNET, etc.) and features; I am not disappointed. The sound is great. It is portable. It looks good. It is not extremely expensive. Those all add up to a real winner. I own a Bose Sound Dock (original) and feel that the sound is better on that speaker system--fuller bass and it fills the room a bit better, however the price was double and it is not portable. I challenge anyone to find something higher quality and more versatile for the $150 or under range.

JBL On Stage Micro II Speaker System for iPod / iPhone (Black) Review

JBL On Stage Micro II Speaker System for iPod / iPhone (Black)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I researched the choice of iPod docks/speakers for a couple of months before deciding on JBL for affordable quality together with innovative design. It then took me another month or so to narrow down which model fit my requirements. The specs on this particular On Stage were almost exactly what I wanted. I sacrificed the extra speakers in order to have the dual battery/adapter power options but the flexibility was worth it. The sound is great for what I need and I love that it takes up so little room wherever I take it. The RC was just an added bonus.

Easy-to-Use Music and Navigation Controls Just a touch of the music controls on the On Stage II increases or decreases the volume.
