Dual XR4110 AM/FM USB/SD/3.5-mm Mechless Receiver (Gray) Review

Dual XR4110 AM/FM USB/SD/3.5-mm Mechless Receiver (Gray)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Simple little device that is very flexible. The radio reception AM and FM is good both in the city and on the highway. Music from the SD card is the easiest way to use the "mech less" device. Be aware that the unit is limited to 16gb, not a real limitation with the SD card but I have an older generation ipod that is 20gb and it will not play through the USB port. However, I can use the auxiliary port with the ipod just fine. The built-in amplifier is not terribly powerful but does put out some good sound in my 1988 VW Vanagon which has a big interior space. I need to turn up the volume control almost all the way if I want it to play loudly. But there are jacks on the unit to connect an external amplifier. Hey, what can you expect for $40. All in all, I am quite satisfied and think that you get a lot of basic features for a cheap price. We shall see how it's long term durability is in a few years but I assume since it's all electronic (hence the term mech less)that there's not much that can go wrong from a wear standpoint. I would highly recommend this unit as a strong value and candidate to replace/upgrade any stock unit in your car.

This "mechless" receiver from Dual Electronics does away with mechanical playback entirely--no discs, no cassettes--just your digital music collection on USB devices or SD cards, your favorite digital music player through the auxiliary input, or some AM/FM radio.

USB/SD Playback The XR4110 features a convenient front-panel USB (1.1) port, for playback of your favorite MP3/WMA files. Connect USB devices with up to 16 GB capacities, and access hours of programming.

Right next to the USB port is a slot for SD cards. Support for SD cards is also 16 GB, giving you yet another storage option for your MP3s and WMAs. SD cards are even more convenient for quickly swapping out, for an almost infinite amount of music right there in your glove compartment.

Auxiliary Input Of course, most folks with a substantial digital music collection also have a favorite iPod or other MP3 player. The standard 3.5-mm mini jack aux input lets you connect and enjoy it. And yes, you can even hook up a portable CD player if you wanted some good old-fashioned skipping playback.

AM/FM Radio Listen to your favorite morning show or catch up on the traffic, news, or weather with the built-in AM/FM tuner. Eighteen FM and 12 AM presets let you instantly pull up your favorite stations.

Blue Display The XR4110 features a brilliant blue four-character display, along with matching blue button illumination.

Preamp Outputs The XR4110 has 60 watts of total power (15 watts x 4 channels), but if you'd like a little more, a pair of 2V preamp outputs is included for system expansion.

One-Year Warranty Dual offers a one-year warranty on parts and labor.
What's in the Box

Peripheral PXDX/PXHGM3 GM Aux Audio RCA/3.5mm In Adapter Review

Peripheral PXDX/PXHGM3 GM Aux Audio RCA/3.5mm In Adapter
Average Reviews:

I have one of these for a 2004 Toyota Camry; bought this one for a 2003 GMC Envoy. Pretty easy to install; the hardest part is getting the dash apart. For help on that, check out victorytechnologies 929 instructions at this link:
[...]
Pretty straightforward: take apart the dash, unscrew the radio, attach the unit to the CD changer slot, and then wire the unit to power. The easiest way is to splice into one of the three cigarette lighter power outlets in the Envoy.
If you're somewhat proficient with tools, this project should be done in about an hour or less.
As for quality: very nice! Sounds much better than any FM transmitter or cassette deck interface. This gives you CD quality sound; I have a Garmin Nuvi 660 GPS hooked up to this for MP3 playback and directions through the SUV speakers.
One other thing for Garmin owners: if you've noticed that your "voices" are to low, you can increase the volume of those voices through TTSVoiceEditor. Download it at:
[...]

Metra 70-1771 Radio Wiring Harness for Ford/Lincoln/Mazda 1998-Up into Car, 16 Pin Review

Metra 70-1771 Radio Wiring Harness for Ford/Lincoln/Mazda 1998-Up into Car, 16 Pin
Average Reviews:

I picked this harness up for an installation on a 2003 Ford F-150. It was easy to install but the instructions do have the "dimmer" wire labeled as Orange/White when it was Orange/Black on this harness. Most people will not use that wire anyway; the orange wire in the harness labeled "illumination" is the one most people will use. For most aftermarket stereos it's just a matter of matching the wires on this harness to the same color wires on your stereo's harness. It can't get much easier than that...
The Good:
Easy to install
Good quality
Price
The Bad:
One mislabeled wire in the instructions

PIE TOY03-AUX Auxiliary Input Converter for Toyota Radios Review

PIE TOY03-AUX Auxiliary Input Converter for Toyota Radios
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I previously had experience with Precision Interface Electronics (PIE) from purchasing an AUX input adapter for my 2002 Honda Civic, which worked great on that vehicle.
I recently purchased a 2007 Toyota Tacoma and expected my $80+ purchase of this TOY03-AUX PIE adapter to work just as it did on my Honda. Wrong.
After installation, I noticed the volume level of the device I was connecting to (Delphi SkyFi 2 XM Radio)was totally unacceptable. I would have the turn the volume of my factory radio to near maximum to listen to my XM radio. Turning up the volume also meant hearing more of the electronic hiss from either or both the XM radio and the factory head unit. I tried my portable MP3 player as well as other devices and had the same result.
After a few weeks of frustration, I exchanged the PIE AUX adapter for the same thing, thinking (hoping) it was defective. With optimism, I took apart the dash of my new truck once more to replace the adapter, and double checking my connections. Guess what? Same result. Ugh!
With the lousy sound quality I'm getting through the PIE AUX adapter, I don't even listen to my XM radio too much anymore. I've been thinking about cancelling my XM service now because of the lack of use.
I've know of other AUX input adatpers. One made by USA-SPEC and the other by Blitzsafe. I would recommend you try these before purchasing the PIE adapter because the PIE adapter is no good. Learn from my mistake.

Long 5ft iPod / iPhone 2-in-1 Audio and Sync Cable. Apple Dock Connector to 3.5mm Audio AUX (Auxiliary) Connector AND USB Charge/sync Connector Review

Long 5ft iPod / iPhone 2-in-1 Audio and Sync Cable. Apple Dock Connector to 3.5mm Audio AUX (Auxiliary) Connector AND USB Charge/sync Connector

This product perfectly charges iphone 4 and allows audio play with your car's aux-in.
My set up goes like this: I'm streaming Pandora via AT&T 3G from my iPhone 4, which is plugged into a "2-in-1 Aux Audio Sync Cable" which splits into a USB out which is plugged into a "USB car charger", and the other split is a "3.5mm line out" which is plugged into the "Ground Loop Isolator" which is plugged into my Toyota Camry Hybrid's aux-in port.
Without the Ground Loop Isolator, there is a discernible, audible whitenoise hum/buzz. The isolator 100% eliminates all traces of this, leaving just pure and clear audio to stream through.
Components mentioned:
* iphone 4
* Long 5ft iPod / iPhone 2-in-1 Audio and Sync Cable. Apple Dock Connector to 3.5mm Audio AUX (Auxiliary) Connector AND USB Charge/sync Connector
* Sony PRS-500 Black USB Car Charger 1,000 maH - [...]

I've gone through many inferior 3.5mm cables in the past several months, looking for something with good sound quality in my car. Most cable jacks seem to wear out quickly, and the sound degrades. Usually one side goes out, or gets staticky. So I went for the big fat cable, which does not have these problems, but has an unanticipated problem: I mount my iPhone to the dash, and the jack sticks right up out of the iphone, into my field of view, and invariably gets in my way. It's incredibly annoying. I'm going to give this one to my husband, who doesn't mount his iPod and so doesn't have the same problem, and try this: InCarCables Car Stereo Ipod/mp3 Auxiliary Aux-in Input Cable 3.5mm (4ft/1.2m) Hopefully I'll get good sound AND a cable that's not in my way. Wish me luck.

I used to have a cable just like this for my car that was sold by Newer Technology but after it got crashed by some bags in my car, I needed a new one. I got this one since I couldn't find the same one I use to have, and also this one is way cheaper. But I swear, it's the same exact cable! it looks the same, and it works just like my old one.
As a side note, the static noise you sometimes hear if you use a cable like this, comes from a ground loop with your aux input and 12V socket. My 07 Prius had the same issue, and I got an inline RF filter which made it a little better, but after reading some forums, I found that I can just ask my dealer to put in a filter circuit for free! I haven't had any issues ever since. So if you get a noise using this cable in a car, chances are that you need a RF filter, and it's not the cable's fault. Try unplugging the USB plug from 12V charger, and if noise goes away, then get an RF filter installed. Or just use it without the charger. It will still sound better than using mini jack to mini jack cable from the headphone output...

3.5mm Male to Male Retractable Cable Review

3.5mm Male to Male Retractable Cable
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Even including the price of shipping, this thing still cost about 10% of what it'd have cost at a local electronics shop, so it already has that going for it. Add to it that it's got gold contacts (a bonus which I wasn't expecting) and that it's retractable (I hate dangly wires in my car!), and playing tunes through my cell phone or MP3 player, the sound is clear and no distortion is detectable. Of course, I don't crank my sound system to ear-bleed levels, either, but for my purposes (and I've only had it for a day) it just plain works great. I hope to update in a few weeks after I've given it a little more of a workout.

Pioneer DEH-2200UB CD Receiver with iPod Direct Control and USB Input Review

Pioneer DEH-2200UB CD Receiver with iPod Direct Control and USB Input
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this so I could use the USB slot and it works great. It loads all the songs in about 2 seconds (even with a large thumb drive of 4 GB or more of music) and then there is no wait time when scrolling through tracks. It clearly displays the song title and you can adjust it to display the track by title, album, etc. I'm not a huge stereo person so I don't care about amps and making my car vibrate, but I will say that my music plays clearly and I can turn it up much louder than I need too without my music being distorted in any way. The buttons are a little small, but you get used to them. I did plug my blackberry phone into the AUX port and it did play my songs. However, no information about the song was displayed on the stereo's display and I had to control my music through the Blackberry, which is a pain. Luckily, I plan on using the USB slot, this is just an FYI for those of you who don't have an ipod and wanted to know if other mp3 players could utilize the stereo's controls. All in all this was a great value for the money and it does everything that I need it to do.

Pioneer's DEH-2200UB is an affordable replacement for your bare-bones OEM system, giving you playback of WMA/MP3 files from disc or USB devices, optional direct iPod control, selectable green/red key illumination, and then some.

DEH-2200UB Features
Detachable Faceplate When you're away from your car, remove the face from the receiver for protection against theft.
The faceplate features a one-line, 10-character LCD display, along with a large rotary volume control.
Dual Color Illumination Choose the button illumination color from Red or Green to suit your vehicle--or mood.
CD-R/RW Playback Play back your favorite CDs and burnt CD-R/RW discs in the slot-loading CD player.
MP3 and WMA Playback Don't let your favorite music downloads languish on your computer hard drive. Burn them to a CD-R or CD-RW and play them right on the car stereo. Each disc you burn has the capacity to hold up to ten complete albums of MP3 music and twenty for WMA discs. Trust us, that's a lot of music.
iPod Made Easy It's easy! Simply plug your iPod directly into the unit using the optional CD-IU50 iPod cable, and you are ready to rock and roll. Listening to an artist that you just can't get enough of? Now you can hold the "List" button down and it will pop up folders containing that specific artist, album, or genre. You can also have your passenger control your music directly from the iPod.
Bring Your Music to Life with Advanced Sound Retriever This year you can hear the detail, warmth, and clarity the way the artist intended it, from all of the highly compressed MP3, WMA and AAC files playing on your CD player. By restoring data that tends to get lost in the digital compression process, we can make your music sound close to CD quality.
Supertuner IIID AM/FM Tuner Pioneer's legendary Supertuner IIID combines the best of digital and analog tuner technologies to reduce distortion to bring you exceptional FM and AM performance. If you live in an area where reception is weak, you'll hear a big improvement in signal strength. And when you're near tall buildings, Supertuner IIID reduces the effect of multi-path noise, which occurs when the signal is reflecting off of the buildings.
MOSFET 50W x4 Amplifier for the Power Hungry Compared to conventional power supplies, the MOSFET amplification circuit is smaller and more efficient, delivering power with less distortion and absolutely zero on/off switching noise. And that doesn't just mean a boost in volume: it means that your music will be cleaner at higher volumes because you're not pushing the limits of the amplification circuit. Clean, efficient power that will rock your vehicle.
Inevitably, there will be those who still need more. The DEH-2200UB is therefore equipped with a pair of 2.2V rear preamp outputs for system expansion with external amps/speakers.
Get Plugged In Use the built-in AUX input for connecting any digital portable player and other external auxiliary devices. For extra-convenient access, the input is on the front panel.
Dial In Your Sound Tweak the sound to your liking with the on-board three-band EQ. A Loudness feature ensures ample low-end even during quiet listening, and standard balance/fader controls let you adjust the stereo image to suit your vehicle and preferences.

3.5mm JACK Car AUX Audio/Charger/sync Connector for iPod, iPhone 2G/3G/3GS/4G w/ Universal USB Mini Car Charger Adapter Review

3.5mm JACK Car AUX Audio/Charger/sync Connector for iPod, iPhone 2G/3G/3GS/4G w/ Universal USB Mini Car Charger Adapter
Average Reviews:

It's convenient to have a single cable for the power And audio out. The cable is long enough to reach the back seats. The 30 pin connector has mechanism to lock itself when connected to the iPhone. That is really good to have - it won't come off while you are driving. There are release tabs on it you will have to press to take the connector off.
Now here are the bad parts. The connector was larger than the cutout on my phone case. Since the case is made of rubber like material, I was able to cut open the slot big enough. Looks ugly but works. The other bad part is that when the power is applied, I can sometimes hear a high pitch sound being added. It is poor noise shielding on the cable or bad voltage converter in the mini charger. Luckily I don't need to use the power often.

Griffin AutoPilot for iPod Review

Griffin AutoPilot for iPod
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I emailed Griffin asking if they had something like this for the iphone 3g and they told me they had tested it and it worked perfectly. I ordered it and they were right! It works great. The only issue is it complains that its not iphone compatible but it charges the unit and plays the music thru the audio out perfectly. I also am not detecting any serious cell phone signal issues.
So if you want a fairly compact charger and audio out solution (you must have some sort of audio in on your car stereo, even a cassette adapter will work) then this is perfect. I also use the buttons to pause and change tracks which I thought for sure I would not. Turns out its a lot easier to press the buttons on the charger than on my iphone.

The perfect way to charge and control your new iPod touch (or just about any other iPod). Griffin's AutoPilot technology creates the tactile feedback of a button press as you control volume, and track scan forward/backward with one fingertip. A three-color light ring indicates charge status, while a built-in line-out port, volume control and included auxiliary audio cable connect your iPod to your car stereo's AUX-In audio port.

So after the reviews and searching online, I came across this. Like everyone else, I didn't want to pay $40 for the dealer one. I went and ordered from x-pert-s out of Canada. I was really excited when I got it and tried it out immediately in my 2011 Hyundai Sonata. Well, it did not work like the others at all. I have a 5th Gen iPod which seems to be the oldest version it will use. It would not work on the screen and though it played music, I had no control over anything via the car console or my iPod. I was totally put off by spending the cash and nothing to show.
I did try it with my wife's iPhone 3G and it would not come on the screen (said "Connected" only), but was able to control it from the phone itself. Much more than I could do with my iPod.
I was able to get a cord from my dealer and it worked better than this ever did. Honestly, not sure what type of iPod/iPhones the others used, but for a 5th Gen iPod, it was a loss of cash.
